Another product review wahoo! It has been a while and I am still catching up on lots of stuff as well. I keep distracting myself with work and all that malarkey 😩. As I train for my half marathon it has meant I have to run further than 10K so I have had to start thinking about hydration fuel. Normally, for a 10K I never take any water or see the need for any fuel unless it happens to be very hot that day. It will be impossible for me to run 13.1 miles with nothing so I have decided to try out Nuun after hearing good things about them. I am a total novice when it comes to these type of products. Here’s my 2 pence anyways 😉.
Nuun Hydration tablets
Perfect for: Runs longer than an hour and people who don’t like drinking plain water (i.e. Me) but find Lucozade and sports drinks too sweet and high in sugar.
What they say: Sugar Free and give a light refreshing taste. This is perfect for all round hydration but useful for those who require fluid replacement during exercise after losing all that sweat. Electrolytes galore to replace those you have lost including sodium, potassium and some good old calcium for good measure. One tablet dropped into 500ml of plain H2O is more than enough to fill your running water bottle. Comes in tons of flavours. I have only tried the delicious Strawberry Lemonade but I have heard great things about Lemon Lime too 🍹. Suitable before, during and after a run.
Verdict: I am converted! The flavour was delicious, I even make myself a Nuun to take to work because it tastes so nice. On a run I drink to thirst and this has been light enough so I feel like I am hydrated and not overwhelmed by sugar and flavourings. Perfect for runs of 7 miles or more. I’ve started taking a bottle on my long runs as I build up to 12 miles in prep for my Hackney Half. No side effects of feeling bloated. Nuun also offer caffeine flavoured options such as Kona Cola but I don’t usually have caffeine products so didn’t see the need right now. Strawberry Lemonade is yummy though 🍓🍋 😋 but there are so many other flavours that you will hard pressed to find one you don’t like. Wiggle do some great deals but sample packs from their own website may be handy for trying all those flavours.
Last but certainly not least, I cannot stress the importance of hydration during exercise 😓. We lose a lot of water and electrolytes, which we need to function correctly. So for runs of 10K or more please make sure you take something! My strategy is always the same, I drink when I feel thirsty and don’t overload before and after a run. Dehydration and hyponatraemia (low electrolyte concentration) are life threatening conditions, especially on those hot days.
Enjoy Nuun and be good.
How do you hydrate during those long runs? Got something better than Nuun? Leave a comment below and I’ll get back to you 😄
